Independent living and equipment contacts

Below is a range of organisations and charities that offer advice and information to disabled people on independent living and assistive equipment.

Accessible Property Register

The Accessible Property Register website lists accessible property for sale and for rent across the UK.

Assist UK

Assist UK is the national network for impartial advice on independent living equipment, with over 50 local Disabled Living Centres.

Care & Repair Cymru

Care & Repair Cymru is the Welsh national body that works to ensure that all older or disabled people have homes that are safe, secure and appropriate to their needs.

Care & Repair England

Care & Repair England is a charity set up in 1986 to improve the housing and living conditions of older or disabled people in England and so enable them to live independently in their own homes for as long as they wish.

Care & Repair Forum Scotland

The Care & Repair Forum Scotland is the Scottish national co-ordinating body, offering assistance to disabled or older people to improve or adapt their homes according to their needs.

Dial UK

Provides a disability information and advice line on subjects like benefits, community care, equipment, independent living, holidays, discrimination.

Disabled Living Foundation

Provides information on disability equipment, day-to-day household gadgets, new technologies and training techniques.

Dogs for the Disabled

Provides trained dogs that promote independence for disabled people.

Equipment Direct

Equipment Direct offers a free service providing information to improve independent living for older people and those with an impairment. The website has a product and supplier directory and a self-assessment questionnaire as well as general information.

Foundations

Foundations is the national co-ordinating body for Home Improvement Agencies in England

Independent Living (1993) Fund

Set up as a national resource dedicated to the financial support of disabled people to enable them to choose to live in the community rather than in residential care.

Leonard Cheshire Foundation

Leonard Cheshire provides help for disabled people to live independently, for example from a few hours of care at home to more intensive support, at one of their residential and nursing homes.

Motability

Motability is a national UK charity that provides scooters, wheelchairs and adapted vehicles to enable disabled people and their families to become mobile.

National Centre for Independent Living

The National Centre for Independent Living promotes personal assistance as a route to independent living for disabled people.

Queen Elizabeth's Foundation

Works to equip disabled people with skills to increase their independence, mobility, and help them into employment.

Remap

Remap provides one-off technical aids and equipment designed to meet the individual needs of disabled people.

Ricability (RICA: Research Institute for Consumer Affairs)

Ricability is a research charity dedicated to providing independent information of value about disability equipment and other topics to disabled and older consumers.
